Osay
Osay aka Osayuki Uwumarogie is a rapper and singer from Chicago, IL, and is currently based in Atlanta, GA, where she relocated in 2018 after landing an internship with Generation Now, a subdivision of Atlantic Records. Osay says she has been making music for nearly her entire life, remembering making up songs and writing poems as a child. Still, she didn’t start to take music seriously until she graduated college. Blurring the lines of rap and R&B music, Osay says her biggest influences have been Aaliyah, TLC, Lauryn Hill, Biggie Smalls, Eminem, and Brandy. Osay describes herself as “Aaliyah in 2022 as a rapper.” Being most influenced by music from the ‘90s and early 2000s, Osay works to take the nostalgic feel from that music and fuse it with the hard hitting beats of today’s hip-hop to create her own sound.
Osay released her first project, Chapter One… in May of 2021. The 8-track effort is highlighted by the opener, “Rogue,” the dance track, “Shimmy Season,” and the suggestive, “How Many Licks.” When speaking about the project, Osay says, “The premise behind Chapter One… was to give the listener a very broad idea of who Osay the creator is… It’s a peek into the first chapter of my musical journey and of what’s to come.”
