2ssaint aka Malik Hayes fka Stoke is a philosophical rapper and producer from Cleveland, OH that describes his sound as “a cosmic interrogation of self, and a reclamation of ancestral memory for the sake of black futures.” 2ssaint is currently based in Philadelphia, PA, a city he said he relocated to because of its history with the black arts movement, specifically in music and jazz. Not to mention, one of his biggest influences, Black Thought is from Philadelphia, and it is easy to see The Roots’ front man’s influence on his music. 2ssaint’s other main influences are also on the shortlist of best wordsmiths of all time, including Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), OutKast, and Kendrick Lamar.
2ssaint began doing music in 2011 at age 16 as part of a 3-man group called CMMNAVE, along with unknownphrazes and Preem Dinero. In 2019, 2ssaint released the EP, Toys. The project’s standout track, “Abu” will get your attention with its captivating hook, where 2ssaint chants “I need you on my side.” The track was produced by Chicago’s Thelonious Martin, known for his work with artists like Vic Mensa, Curren$y, RetcH, and G Herbo. On the latter half of the EP, you will find a more chill, soul vibe on “Godsport,” which sits in nice contrast with the upbeat, “Abu.” Since 2019, 2ssaint has yet to release another full-length project. Although, he has held us over with a handful of singles, including “Dutchie” and “Nihilism.” He is currently gearing up to release a couple of new EPs in the near future, working heavily with Philly-based singer/producer/engineer/trumpeter/guitarist, Martronimous. You can expect to hear his next self-produced single, “As Jack In Cuckoos Nest” at some point in October of 2021.
